Hour of Code: Promotional Flyer

This flyer is intended to be printed in various forms. It may be a poster, a flyer, a bag stuffer--the possibilities are endless. It is simple enough that it can translate to various forms, to the point that I would even send it electronically in an email blast, or post it as an Instagram post (with the appropriate tags). I develop a lot of flyers and promotional materials for my library and programs, as it is a very independent affair. Because of this, I felt as though this was an easy thing for me to do. I know that simpler is better, bold words are important words, and you must have necessary details without overloading the page with script. Words and paragraphs should match in size and placement on the page, and if you use multiple colors, use them in striking ways. The finals product is shown above, but I made a few other attempts before landing on this one.

My first attempt was fine, and it was cute, but it felt muddled, busy, and disjointed. Moreover, the colors clashed in a way that was hard to read, and there were many different sizes and types of fonts happening. Overall, it was not a great design, but it pushed me to go cleaner and simpler--which helped create my selected first.

My second attempt is pretty good, and I was actually waffling between this one and the one I ultimately chose. Perhaps I chose wrong--let me know in the comments! This one utilized bold colors, pictures, and more patterns that the other two. It has a clean look, similar to the last one I made and chose, but it has more interest and variety. I think I ultimately went with my last one because it was cleaner and to the point and could function across multi-modal formats.

Overall, I feel confident in all three of my designs--two more than the other, of course. I utilized strong colors, the words are succinct and to the point, it contains all necessary information--and I even made sure to put blurbs in each flyer about the Hour of Code organization and where they can read more. I think that these would get folks attention and help promote the program! And I've said this before, but I'll say it again--I love Canva, and I will always use Canva!

  1. Your experience and skill in creating flyers is apparent in all of your drafts. But I agree with you, the first attempt is my least favorite also. I do like the one you chose, but I also really like the second attempt. It has a little bit more of a "fun" aesthetic to it.

  2. I love all three of your flyers, your experience is shining through! I struggled a lot with mine because I wanted to make it pretty but functional and I just couldn't find that balance. I liked this assignment because it let me know more about my own process of creating promotional material!
